American Legion Post 16 Newton sponsors nine local high school students to “Tar Heel Boys State”.
Boys State is a program about teaching students in North Carolina about our form of government and how it operates. This program has been sponsored by the American Legion for more than 70 years. The program has been taught at North Carolina Universities and runs for six days at the host college each year. The University of North Carolina, Wake Forest University and Catawba College have been the host colleges for this program for decades. This year it is being hosted by Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Newton American Legion Post 16 is proud to announce it raised the funds to send 9 students from local high schools in Catawba County to 2014 Tar Heel Boys State. Those students are: Jonathan Midgett, Newton Conover High School, Alexander Mentzer, Newton Conover, High School, Nathaniel Meade, Fred T. Ford, High School, Seth Jarrett, Fred T. Ford, High School, Larry Brown, Bandys High School, Timothy Hudson, Bandys High School, Joshua Helms, Bandys High School, Baily King, Bandys High School, Ryan Laney, Bandys High School. JROTC students from Bunker Hill High School would have been sponsored as well but due to a conflict with the JROTC Air Force summer camp and fly in at the Hickory airport these students could not attend. “Tar Heel Boys State” begins Sunday, June 22nd, 2014 and graduation day is Saturday June 28th, 2014. Family and friends are welcome to attend the graduation ceremonies on June 28th. During the intense program of government studies these students will compete with other high school students from across North Carolina to attend the national “Boys Nation” in Washington D.C., also sponsored by The American Legion, Newton Post 16 of the American Legion is proud to sponsor these fine students from Catawba County and Newton City Schools to a great program which has been attended by Former Boys’ State participants of note include Catawba College Alumnus Phil Kirk ’67, chairman emeritus of the N.C. State Board of Education; professional basketball great Michael Jordan of N.C.; and N.C. Governors Jim Hunt and James Martin. National program alumni of note include former U.S. President Bill Clinton, former U.S. Vice Presidents Al Gore and Dick Cheney, U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, former NBC News Anchor Tom Brokaw and NASA Astronaut Neil Armstrong.. We wish them well in their efforts in Salisbury to better prepare themselves for understanding the best form of government in the entire world.
